“When I finish a book I’m tired, but everything is won by the magic of the words that will go to find you, my readers”
Giovanni Margarone was born in 1965 in Alessandria, to a Sicilian father and a Ligurian mother; he lived in Savona until he was twenty-one, when he left his land for work reasons in 1986.
Assiduous reader and profound lover of literature, philosophy and music, he has always had a natural vocation for writing and music since the age of 12, when in parallel with the study of the piano, he wrote novels and short stories, never published, which he jealously always kept among the relics of his youth.
Growing up, he turned a keen attention to nineteenth-century Russian, French and German literature (in particular Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Proust, Goethe, Gogol, Tolstoy, Bulgakov, Prévost, Balzac to name a few); without forgetting the references to the Italian twentieth century, in the figures, among others, of Pirandello, Svevo, Cassola, Calvino, Cesare Pavese and Umberto Eco. Authors who taught him, inevitably contributing to his literary and stylistic maturation.
His is a narrative characterized by calmness alternating with intensity, which leaves the reader the opportunity to imagine and become intrigued to the point of continuing the reading to the end, all in one breath.
His novels are of the coming-of-age narrative genre due to the evolution that they make (first and foremost interior, and not only) the protagonists (from childhood to adulthood, often going back to the origins, delving into the history of the character). The introspective and psychological component is strong, so the character always remains the central element of the narratives, which could therefore be set in any place. For this reason, the descriptions of the places in which the characters move essentially act as a support, without however weighing it down, but granting the right emphasis. However, this support is not bland, as the writer has a particular ability to describe settings, in fact, by reading, the imagination ranges between colors, cold and heat, twilights, skies, the sea, sounds and noises.
The writer’s works have received numerous awards in national and international literary competitions, confirming the narrative quality, both of plot and style; he also writes editorials and is often interviewed on radio, television and print media. He also has two essays to his credit given his sensitivity to the problems of our society. In 2021, moreover, he obtained the third place in the US competition “1th Annual Short Story Contest” of the Winsconsin with the story in English language “The Secret” and so he plans to propose himself overseas.
In his interviews, the writer has always said that writing cheers him up, bringing him to a profound inner serenity; that he writes to be read, because if he wrote only for himself, it would be an incomplete activity: nothing is more important than sharing ideas for the purpose of ever greater intellectual maturation.
Of course, writing to be read is a great responsibility, but for him it could not be otherwise, as he considers writing as the most effective means to convey feelings, emotions, to induce meditation, as happens for music, after all.
Spirituality is part of ourselves and the spirit must be nourished. The writer always hopes that the reader will draw nourishment for his spirit from his writings and make him the message conveyed through the books.
Being read also means exposing oneself to criticism and the writer is aware of this. Inescapably, every artist who puts his works in public exhibits himself and that’s right. Criticism makes the artist grow and mature, Margarone always says.
